Today I messed around with some of the tools and techniques within Premier Pro and why abstract idents are good.

Todays lesson consisted on learning the basics of flash.

The program started from just creating cartoon animation, this evolved into the program we use today. I learnt quite a lot about what the Adobe Flash program can actually handle. This knowledge came from both the lecture and my last two years in national diploma. Flash uses a particular programming language to make animation controllable, in other words, human computer interaction. Flash much prefers vectors so the animation and sizes of animation can be resized without lossless of quality. Image manipulation is very hard in Flash, however, using Photoshop for this process is much easier as you can import the finished image afterwards. Flash is also widely used throughout the Internet, not only for websites but also games and applications. From previous experience and knowledge I have found out that Flash in websites can be very complicated as it is hard to amend a website and browsers need a plug-in to be able to view that particular content. The program is capable creating and performing complex animation such as transitions and effects, a good example of this would be in on-line brochures. There are a number of advantages to using Flash, a few of these are quick download times, live streaming, interactive and easy work-flow. As there are advantages, there of course, must be disadvantages, some of these are, action script is very difficult, java and PHP are replacing key flash elements and the website is difficult to maintain. This program seems quite the idea choice for creating the ident for my creative tech project. However, after considering that I will be assessed more on the software I use rather than the quality, I might choose another program. The reason for this is because Flash can be a very complex learning curve and will take up a lot of my time. Therefore, I am considering another program.

The importance of what I learnt today was to help me experiment with various techniques within the Flash program. Not only that but I think that (even though it was not in the task sheet or brief) it will help me choose if it is the ideal program to build my idents in. Also knowing the history and the uses of the program have proved to be very useful as it extends my knowledge of the subject and informs me into what is actually possible in terms of bringing the ident to life.

I did have a task for todays lesson and it was to play around with the Flash program and see what is possible. This actually proved hard for me as I did not manage to grasp the simple stuff very easily. Having said that, my designs and experiments did not reflect my best work.

After trying out some experiments in Flash I can see that my tasks did not go all that well. However, I think the solution to my unsuccessful experiments would be more time using Flash and possibly making use of tutorials online. This method has actually worked well for me in the past. When I first started using Photoshop I found it hard to use it. After using some tutorials I ended up getting the hang of it. Therefore, from past experience I think online tutorials may work.

Today, one of the founders of a company came in to talk to the entire class about the ident assignment. I also showed him the first designs I came up with for the ident and got some good feedback.

I learnt a hell of a lot today, not just about the ident but also what the company does and so on. I found out that the company started from just Christmas parties for freelancers and so on. Speakers at these parties grew and grew and eventually developed into what the company is today. The ident is supposed to be used for introductions to speakers, and films that have been taken from other events. Therefore, the ident should be no longer than 30 seconds. The founder who came to see us also mentioned that he thinks audio is important and that the correct audio in the ident could make or break it. The audience is obviously for people in the industry but also students who have an interest and even people all over the world. I also picked up that the ident should not be picture heavy and I should leave out buildings due to copyright. Small videos can also be put in to represent certain elements of the company.

The point to learning all this was so that I could get a much better idea of how to design and produce the ident. Knowing how long the ident is supposed to be is really valuable, because then I wont get to waste time creating an ident that lasts for longer. Other things such as knowing what to put in the ident, like pictures, video and so on is good because now I know exactly what content can be used.

I created 5 different ident designs to show to the client. Once he looked at my designs and gave me some feedback. Most of the designs were no good, however, there were some elements of some designs which he really liked. For example, the blue, wavy lines seemed good and I can now use it in another designs. The only problems I had with creating these designs is that I think I did not have enough information to go on and I struggled to come up with these ideas. Also I put things into these designs that had no relevance to to company or branding.

As mentioned above, I did not have enough information to go on when creating my designs. So a good way of avoiding this in the future is to research on the company/client a lot. This way, I get enough information and I can use this information to relate back to my designs.

Today I went through yet another assignment brief, the one I have been waiting for. Not only that but I also got given a task to do to start off the assignment.

I learnt a lot today, not only about the assignment briefs but also specific terms and parts of the assignment. The assignment brief stated that 20th of January is the deadline and everthing must be in. One of the first things I learnt today was the process I must use to complete all the tasks in the course. This process has 7 stages. The first is defining the brief which means, I need to know exactly what I need to do and what materials I might need to complete the project. The second stage is research, which means I have to find out the audience, colour scheme and so on for the artifact. The third stage is ideate solution, which means I have to come up with ideas and start developing these ideas and test out some examples and elements. The fourth stage is meeting the client and presenting them with the prototypes to see if it exactly what they were looking for. The fifth is to develop prototypes. For this project I have been asked to create a family of idents, therefore, I need to create a family of prototypes and draft copies. The sixth stage is implementing the prototypes, so perfecting them and getting them work. This is the stage where I will create the whole family of idents (as mentioned above). The final stage is for learning and feedback. So getting people to evaluate what I have done and then decide on what I would do differently if I were to to do the project again. I also learnt that before the project I should find some background information on the clients company. This means finding out how many people work there, the branding of the company and what the company actually does. I also gathered information on what an ident actually is. For example, it is to market a business or TV channel not as an advert but as a snippet in-between programs and adverts. Idents also have to be interesting and entertaining to ensure it attracts attention.

The point to learning this large amount of information is to give me a good head start to the project. It has also got me ready to start and complete the first task I was given. This first task was to come up with 5 different ident designs. The point to learning what an ident is, is to make sure I know what an ident does and what is required to make a good ident.

I cannot comment on the success of any tasks because I have only just been given the task.

I also cannot comment on and task solutions for the same reason
